Montezuma is located on the east coast of the Nicoya Peninsula 8NM from Isla Cabo Blanco. The anchorage is open to the south and east, it offers no protection from the prevailing winds and is exposed to swell on all but the calmest day.
Evenso the small town is picturesque and laid-back with an arty beach culture. Known locally as “Montefuma” the village offers yoga at dawn, nuts and seeds for breakfast followed by some uplifting herbs sold by a local neo-rasta. Hike to the waterfall or follow the path northwards along the coast and take your pick from several deserted beaches.

Anchorage
Keep clear of the rocky reef which extends out from the southern side of the beach. Stay on the north side of the cove and anchor in 9m on a sandy bottom. Take great care landing the dinghy as waves are almost continuously crashing on the beach, local boats favour the southwest corner close to the rocks which diminish the swell a little. Preferably go ashore using kayak, paddleboard or surf board.
Facilities
Monotezuma has numerous guesthouses, several rstaurants and bars and a large grocery store which sells freshly baked bread. The hike to the waterfall follows a river through the rainforest; immerse yourself in the myriad tones of green and the drone of the cicadas as you walk and enjoy the cool chill of a swim in the rocky pool. Look out for the balanced rock sculptures on the beach at Piedra Colorada.
A 7km ride bus will take you to the small town of Cobano which hosts several supermarkets, a bank, a service station and a few desultory restaurants. When filling jerry cans at the service station make sure you check the amount of fuel poured and watch out for overcharging.
