Puerto Cortez is a small settlement on Isla Margarita, the craggy island bounding the southwest side of Bahia Magdalena. The harbour at the naval base is military only and should only be entered in an emergency situation however the anchorage is a possible hurricane hole.

Approaches

Strong tidal flows drain through Marcy Channel so passage should be planned appropriately.

Anchorage

Anchor outside the restricted area in 2.4m in sand. However anchorage close to a military facility may not be permitted. Shore access is by dinghy to the beach as the harbour is closed to non-military persons.

Tucked in the lee of Punta San Marte the Punta San Marcial anchorage provides great shelter from southwest through to the north. However this is not a good anchorage in the wet season as it is open to the south and east.

Approaches

Reefs extend almost 1NM southeast of Punta Marte on the northern side of the bay.

Anchorage

Anchor off the white sand beach tucked in carefully behind the reef in 3.9m on sand. Landing the dinghy ashore can be hazardous when the swell is running.

Facilities

None. Snorkeling or diving on the reef off Punta San Marte is surprisingly good.

Bahia Santa Marta lies about 2NM south of Punta San Marcial. The tiny cove is open to wind and swell from northeast to south but may offer some protection from strong northerlies that stream down the Sea of Cortez in the dry season.

Approaches

Rocks and reef extend at least 100m from the point on the north side of Bahia Marta. Give the point a wide berth and keep a lookout on the bow as you enter the bay.

Anchorage

Anchor in the centre of the bay in 4.8m on a sandy bottom. Dinghy ashore but take care landing if waves are breaking on the beach.

Isla Coyote is one of the few inhabited islands on the east coast of the Baja. The tiny island is less than 50m high and offers little protection from wind from any direction except possibly the north. The reef and islets extending from the western side of the island provide some protection from the northern swell.

Anchorage

Anchor in 3.5m on sand. Local boats pull up on the tiny beach but there should be space to pull another dinghy up. Take care landing on the beach if the swell is running. Manuel, the last full time resident of the island, will meet you on the beach and help you tie up.

Facilities

None. Manuel has lived on the island for fifty years and raised his family there. He will guide you around and show you the Whale Museum (a collection of whale bones). His water and provisions are brought from San Evaristo and his news comes via VHF, cell phone or passing cruisers. He is very welcoming. A path leads from the settlement up to the summit and has great views.

The bay across the sand spit from Isla San Francisco-W at the southeast end of Isla San Francisco is exposed to wind and swell from north to south. This is a rolly anchorage in all but calm conditions but is a reasonable place to shelter if a coromuel comes up.

None. There is a great hiking trail leading to the top or the cliff at the southern end of the island.

Playa Pichilingue lies in the bay to the north of the large port Puerto de Pichilingue, 5.2NM from the channel entrance to La Paz Harbour. The bay overshadowed by the port and is often busy with local boat traffic. It is protected from the north but has no shelter in a westerly buster.

Anchor on the northern side of the bay in 7m with good holding on a sandy bottom. Access the shore via the beach or the dinghy dock at the marina.

Facilities

The bay has cellular reception. There are a couple of restaurants and a boat ramp at the northern end of the beach. Club Marina Cantamar is located at the north end of Isla San Juan Nepomuceno at the southern end of the bay.
